This 1981 Puma GTI is one of approximately 610 Brazilian-built examples and is finished in Zermatt silver metallic over a black interior. This 1981 Puma GTI is one of approximately 610 Brazilian-built examples and is finished in Zermatt silver metallic over a black interior. Power is supplied by an air-cooled 1,776cc flat-four mated to a four-speed manual transaxle. It was acquired by the seller in Canada in 2019 and subsequently underwent a refurbishment that included a repaint and replacement chassis, along with an overhaul of the engine, a replacement exhaust, an aftermarket stereo, and a modified suspension. Equipment includes a torsion bar suspension with 4” drop spindles and front air struts, 18” Porsche wheels, Kilmat sound deadening, a Sparco steering wheel, a sunroof, and a JVC stereo.
The Rino Malzoni-designed fiberglass body was built on a Volkswagen Type 1 chassis, and this example was repainted its current shade of Zermatt silver metallic following bodywork under current ownership. The seller states that the chassis and floors were also replaced at that time. Exterior details include H4 headlights that were installed by the seller, custom stainless-steel bumper supports, a sunroof, and dual exhaust outlets.
Refinished 18” Porsche GT3 wheels wear black and white Porsche center caps and are mounted with 115/30 Maxxis rubber up front and 165/35 Dunlop Direzza tires out back. The torsion bar suspension system reportedly features 4” drop spindles and front air struts. The brakes were serviced under current ownership.
The cabin is trimmed in black upholstery and features a matching dash, door panels, and carpeting. Kilmat sound deadening was added and the center console was reupholstered under current ownership. Additional amenities include a JVC stereo linked with Nakamichi speakers, manual windows, and an analog clock mounted in the center stack.
A leather-wrapped Sparco steering wheel fronts VDO instrumentation that consists of a 200-km/h speedometer, a 6k-rpm tachometer, and centrally-mounted auxiliary gauges. The odometer shows 48k kilometers (~30k miles).
The air-cooled Volkswagen flat-four was reportedly rebuilt and increased in displacement to 1,776cc during current ownership. The exhaust system was also replaced, and an oil change was performed in preparation for the sale.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle.
