This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 coupe is finished in Light Ivory over Dark Brown leather and is powered by a 3.5-liter M116 V8 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Equipment includes 14″ steel wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, an electric sunroof, a Behr air-conditioning system, power windows, and a Becker Europa radio. Work carried out since July 2020 consisted of rebuilding the transmission, adjusting the valves, servicing the air-conditioning system, changing the fluids, and replacing the water pump, fan clutch, thermostat, fuel pump, distributor cap, battery, tires, spark plugs, valve cover gaskets, belts, and filters.
The 3.5-liter coupe received flatter taillights, rubber bumper strips, and a lower, wider grille compared to other contemporary W111 models. This example is finished in Light Ivory (670) and was optioned with an electric sunroof. The seller states that the car was refinished under previous ownership.
Steel 14″ wheels wear color-matched covers and were mounted with 205/75 Toyo Extensa A/S II tires in December 2021. A matching spare is stored in the trunk. Bilstein shocks are fitted, and power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes were standard equipment. A brake fluid flush was carried out in November 2020.
The cabin is trimmed in Dark Brown leather and the front seats were reupholstered by Ken Neminick of Vintage Automotive Upholstery. Equipment includes a Becker Europa radio, wood trim, Behr air conditioning, power windows, and a center console. Air conditioning service in September 2021 included replacing the expansion valve and receiver drier as well as recharging the R134a refrigerant.
The ivory two-spoke steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation including a 7k-rpm tachometer, a 160-mph speedometer, and gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 64k miles.
The fuel-injected 3.5-liter M116 V8 features overhead camshafts and was factory rated at 197 horsepower and 211 lb-ft of torque. Work carried out since July 2020 included adjusting the valves and replacing the following components:
- Water pump
- Thermostat
- Fuel pump and filter
- Distributor cap
- Fan clutch and belts
- Upper and lower radiator hoses
- Valve cover gaskets
- Spark plugs and wires
- Battery and cables
- Fluids
Power is sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission that was rebuilt in November 2020.
