This 1959 Mercedes-Benz 220SE sedan was refurbished as part of a multi-year project completed from 2020 to 2024 that involved a repaint in black and silver as well as cosmetic, engine, and brake work. The car features a Webasto vinyl folding sunroof along with yellow-lens Hella fog lights and rides on 13″ steel wheels with full covers. Inside, blue velour–trimmed seats are accompanied by wood trim as well as a Becker radio. Power is provided by a fuel-injected 2.2L M127 inline-six mated to a column-shifted four-speed manual transmission.
The 220SE model was introduced in late 1958 as the final evolution of the Ponton platform’s six-cylinder variants, and this example is one of less than 150 that are claimed to have left the factory with a Webasto vinyl folding sunroof. Originally finished in Black (040), the car was repainted in its current black and silver color scheme in January 2024 as part of the aforementioned refurbishment project. The wraparound bumpers and various chrome accents were also replaced under current ownership along with the vinyl sunroof and door seals. Yellow-lens Hella fog lights, fender-mounted turn signals, flared quarter panels, a driver-side mirror, and a key-locked fuel filler door are further details.
Steel 13″ wheels feature slotted chrome covers and are mounted with Carlstar Radialtrail tires. The car was factory equipped with a double-wishbone front and single-joint rear axle suspension with coil springs. Stopping power is provided by vacuum-boosted hydraulic drums, which were serviced in preparation for the sale with replacement master and wheel cylinders.
The cabin houses bucket seats upholstered in blue cloth with gray vinyl sides along with color-coordinated door panels and carpets. Wood trim accents the dash, pillars, and window surrounds, and the headliner was replaced in preparation for the sale. Further details include a Becker Europa push-button radio, an electric clock, and a heater.
A two-spoke steering wheel features a chrome horn ring and frames VDO instrumentation consisting of a horizontal-sweep 110-mph speedometer, a trip odometer, and gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 68k miles.
The 2.2L M127 inline-six was factory equipped with Bosch mechanical fuel injection and was rated at 115 horsepower and 137 lb-ft of torque. Work in preparation for the sale involved installing a Crane Cams ignition, repairing the fuel tank, and replacing the exhaust manifold gasket.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a column-shifted four-speed manual transmission.
